Identifying your target audience and positioning your website

Once you’ve set your objectives and formulated a mission statement for your site, begin to you need to think about your target audience and how you want to position your site. Of course, this will be informed by the genre of your book. To a degree, you will have already done this when deciding on the cover for your book.  When thinking about the sort of cover that attract readers, you will have already considered your target audience no doubt. It’s the same target audience that you can expect will visit your website. Your site must be designed in such a way that visitors respond to it positively, wanting to find out more about your books and about you!

Consider following factors about your potential visitors:

1. Demographic profile: age, gender, marital status, ethnicity, occupation etc
2. Geographic profile: country, county, city, town, size of population etc
3. Behavioural profile: reasons for visiting your site etc
4. Psychographic profile: interests, activities, opinions, attitudes etc

The answer to these questions will impact on the general look and feel of your site:

  • The tone of voice you use
  • Your website’s navigation system
  • The number of pages you need
  • Method of contact
  • Your website’s colour scheme
  • Your logo
  • In short – everything about your site
